To quote Forest Lake head boys swimming coach Joseph Mau, the Rangers had a “phenomenal” True Team State meet on Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Forest Lake finished in seventh place overall out of 12 teams.
Nearly every Ranger swimmer dropped times, and three varsity Ranger records were broken.
Junior Duncan Johnson, senior Matt Clayton, sophomore Ben Chatwin and junior Wyatt Thompson collaborated for a new school record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:38.77, good for third place overall at True Team State.
Johnson set a record in the 200-yard individual medley with a mark of 1:58.72 to place sixth, while Chatwin also set an individual record in the 50-yard freestyle by clocking in at 21.46 to clinch second place overall in the event.
Other top finishers at Aquatic Center included Thompson with a seventh-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, Chatwin taking sixth in the 100-yard butterfly and Johnson, senior Brad Youngquist, Thompson and Chatwin in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The relay squad place fifth in the event.
Other top-10 placers were Johnson with a ninth-place spot in the 100-yard backstroke, Thompson in the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle foursome of sophomore Connor Klein, junior Journey Roberge, senior Grant Maxfied and Youngquist in ninth place overall. Clayton earned 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke.
“The boys really swam and dove well on the biggest of stages, and Dick, Bob and I can’t be more proud of their hard work and accomplishments they continue to post this season,” Mau said.
Next up, the Rangers return to their Suburban East Conference schedule for a 6 p.m. home meet against Park on Thursday, Feb. 11.
