A black bear cub roamed Forest Lake starting on Sunday, prompting many calls to the Police Department.

“It is a very cute cub, I have to admit,” said Chief Rick Peterson.

But he warned against interacting with the animal. The DNR advises those encountering bears to let them be, and not to attempt to shoo them away.

The young bear explored the neighborhood by Schumacher Field on Sunday. Capt. Greg Weiss joked about charging the cub with criminal damage to property for knocking down a birdfeeder in the yard of his parents. The bear also appeared in the Lakes International Language Academy parking lot, east of Highway 61, just 20 minutes after being spotted north of Clear Lake.

The bear had not left town as of Monday night, when it was seen crossing Schilling Circle in northwest Forest Lake.
