Minnesota’s Fourth of July capital celebrates again

$

The familiar sounds, sights, and smells of carnival rides and cotton candy will blanket downtown Forest Lake beginning June 30 at the city prepares for its days-long Fourth of July celebration.

The centerpiece of the Forest Lake Independence Day schedule of events is the annual parade held from 10 a.m. to noon on July 4. The event is so popular, in fact, that the Forest Lake police department issued a warning regarding the saving of spots along the parade route. Law enforcement officials said that no structures, tarps, chairs, or anything else are allowed on the parade route until sunrise on Monday, July 4. Parking along the parade route for Monday morning is also restricted, and vehicles will be towed.

Two folks who will not be towed, but instead will be riding in style, are Barb Olson and Henry G. “Hank” Houle. The two were chosen as the Grand and Honorary Grand Marshals of this year’s parade. For Olson, the honor was a long time coming.

“I had been asked if I would accept the honor of being the Grand Marshal for probably five or six years in a row,” Olson said. “I always said no because I didn’t want the spotlight shined on myself because there are so many people involved in the community that do so much.”

Eventually, the hounding paid off and Olson gave in to the request. The honor has its roots in city history, as Olson has been active in the Legion for 45 years and has been an integral part of the parade planning process since 1973. Originally from White Bear Lake, Olson was scheduled to be an air traffic controller or a radar tech in the Marines, but she wound up serving from 1954 to 1957 in the supply unit instead. After a stint in California, Olson moved back to Forest Lake and took an active role in volunteering with the American Legion. She holds the distinction of being Post 225’s first female commander.

“This is all a lot for me to take in,” Olson said. “Even though a lot of people do know me, I try to kind of keep a low profile. This has really put me front and center. Being chosen as the Grand Marshal is such an honor, and I feel like there are no words to describe how ecstatic I am.”

Honorary Grand Marshal Henry G. “Hank” Houle is a lifetime Forest Lake resident who graduated Forest Lake High School in 1943 and served in the military from 1948 to 1950, where he attended clerk and typist school. He credits that experience as one that was crucial to his ability to succeed in business in later years. That business was real estate, and Houle served the Forest Lake community in that capacity for more than 30 years. He will be riding the parade route with his wife Elaine in a convertible. Together, the two remain very active in the community through volunteer work at the Columbus Senior Center and Wyoming Family Pathways. Houle is a member of the board of directors for Wyoming State Bank and he and his bride have been members of St. Peter Church since 1960, when they worked as part of the team that was instrumental in getting the current church built. Hank and Elain have been blessed with four children, nine grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.

“To be able to get this honor of being Grand Marshal was a great surprise to me,” Houle said. “It is very nice to be recognized in this way by my fellow community members. I am very happy and honored to accept this recognition.”

In an effort to help promote and fund all of the planned activities, Forest Lake Floral and Roberts Family Life Celebration Home have joined forces to create and sell a red, white, and blue commemorative Forest Lake t-shirt. They are selling the shirts for $10 a piece. Pre-sale is available at www.forestlakefloral.com/forest-lakes-4th-of-july-t-shirt-and-fundraiser, and shirts will be sold in-store on July 1 for $25 each.

To kick off the festivities, the carnival rides will be available from 5 to 10 p.m. June 30. The rides and games will remain available July 1 to 3 from noon to midnight and close out with a 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. run on the fourth. Outdoor food vendors will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. June 30 and July 1, as well as 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. June 2 and 3 and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 4. Bingo and live music will also be scattered throughout the weekend. Check ci.forest-lake.mn.us/190/4th-of-July for a complete schedule of events.

Forest Lake’s Fourth of July activities will culminate with the annual fireworks extravaganza at 10 p.m. July 4 with prime viewing available from positions throughout Lakeside Memorial Park. A full list of activities, including a map of the parade route, is available at ci.forest-lake.mn.us/190/4th-of-July.

Man airlifted after Columbus crash

A man was airlifted from the scene of a car crash the morning of June 29 after his vehicle hit a tree off the side of Kettle River Boulevard in Columbus.

According to the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, the crash was discovered around 5:30 a.m. A vehicle with one occupant had gone off the side of the road and struck a tree near the intersection of Kettle River Boulevard and 181st Avenue. Forest Lake firefighters completed a minor extrication of the man, and he was taken from the scene by helicopter. The driver’s name, what hospital he was taken to, the kind of vehicle he was driving and the extent of his injuries have not yet been released.

The sheriff’s office reported that the man may have crashed his vehicle much earlier in the morning, only being noticed when the sun started to come up. Currently, alcohol is not thought to be a factor in the crash, but the incident is still under investigation.

The Forest Lake Times will post more information as it becomes available.

In May of this year, the KSTP-TV produced television program “Twin Cities Live” launched a series called “TCL In Your Town.”  Each week, they shine a spotlight on a different town. Forest Lake will be featured the first full week in July. Every day that week Twin Cities Live will feature the different things that make Forest Lake great. The week will culminate when TCL’s Steve Patterson co-hosts the show live from Vanelli’s by the Lake from 3 to 4 p.m. As part of the honor, Patterson will be joined by Forest Lake mayor Steve Stegner to officially declare July 7 “Twin Cities Live Day” in Forest Lake.
Twin Cities Live is an hour-long entertainment television show. The show’s theme is “Food, Fashion and Fun.” Twin Cities Live is about more than just Minneapolis and Saint Paul and this summer, they wanted to focus on celebrating communities from all around the area, especially communities that have vibrant downtowns, fun boutiques, great restaurants and proud locals. Thus, “TCL In Your Town” was born.
